Gunman who opened fire, yelled about President Trump inside Trump Doral hotel shot by officers – police

Florida- Authorities in South Florida said a man who opened fire early Friday morning in the lobby of  Trump National Doral Miami resort in Doral, Florida, was “yelling” about President Donald Trump before he was shot and wounded by police.

Both Miami-Dade Police and Doral Police responded to reports of shots fired at the hotel around 1:30 a.m., Doral Police Chief Hernan Organvidez said during a news conference. Upon arrival officers from both police departments exchanged fire with the man and were able to take him into custody “without further incident,” Organvidez said.

Police said the man was armed with a semiautomatic handgun, CBS News reported.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital after being shot multiple times in the lower extremities, WPLG reported. His condition is unknown, according to a statement from Miami-Dade Police. One officer sustained a broken wrist, according to reports. The officer was also taken to a hospital and is in good condition, Organvidez said.

In the statement, police said “No shooting victims have been reported at this time.”

There was no need to evacuate the hotel as the man was swiftly “neutralized,” authorities said. The melee lasted less than two minutes, Organvidez said.

The man was allegedly “yelling and spewing some information about President Trump,” Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said during the news conference. He was not believed to be a guest at the hotel, police said.

Perez said the man also draped an American flag over a counter in the hotel’s lobby. There he waited for police, engaging them in a gunfight when they arrived, according to the Miami Herald.

“We’re not saying that this is terrorism, we’re not saying anything like that, but we’re not discounting anything at this point,” Perez said, adding that the investigation is still in its early stages. Perez said federal agents were on the scene or en route.

The Secret Service said none of the people it protects were in the Miami area when the shooting occurred. The agency said in a statement that it was aware of the shooting and had dispatched special agents from its Miami field office to the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police-involved shooting, according to authorities.

A traffic alert warned people to avoid the area near the hotel due to “a large police presence.”

The luxury hotel is part of Trump National Doral Golf Club, an 800-acre resort owned by Trump outside Miami. Trump purchased the golf course in 2012 for $150 million.

A spokesperson for the Trump Organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons who helps manage the company, tweeted a message of thanks to the police officers who responded to the shooting, “A huge thank you to the incredible men and women of the @DoralPolice Department and @MiamiDadePD. Every day they keep our community safe. We are very grateful to you!”

Perez said the joint response to the shooting was “seamless” and called the officers “heroic.”

“These officers did not hesitate one second to engage this individual who was actively shooting in the lobby of the hotel,” he said. “They risked their lives knowing that they had to get in there to save lives in that hotel.”
