Mahumapelo protests: Alleged North West looters in court

RUSTENBURG, May 7 – Five alleged looters are due to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court in the North West on Monday on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods, North West police said.

North West police spokesman Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the suspects were arrested in Seweding on Friday during a police track and recovery operation.

“The suspects were arrested after positive information was given to the police. It was during the search at the suspects’ places that plumbing and building material worth thousands [of rand] that were looted from a local hardware business were found,” Mokgwabone said.

Many shops were looted during a spate of violent protest in the North West from April 18, with residents in Montshioa blocking roads with burning objects and torching a bus.

The protesters were demanding that North West premier Supra Mahumapelo resign allegations of corruption.

The protest spread to other villages surrounding the capital Mahikeng, and it was locked down for three days. Protests also spread to other parts of the province.
