Mpumalanga MEC in serious head-on collision with taxi

MBOMBELA, January 31 (ANA) – Mpumalanga MEC for agriculture, rural development, land and environmental affairs Vusi Shongwe has survived a serious accident when the car he was driving collided with a minibus taxi in Mbombela early on Wednesday.

Joseph Mabuza, spokesman for the department of community safety, security and liaison, the accident happened at 00:30 on the R40 road. He said Shongwe was the only occupant of the car.

“MEC Shongwe was driving south bound from the White River direction when the driver of a minibus taxi allegedly turned and drove onto the oncoming traffic lane,” said Mabuza.

“The two vehicles collided head-on. It was a serious accident because both vehicles were badly damaged. The driver of the taxi, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was seriously injured and transported to the hospital. I’m not sure if he was discharged from the hospital. MEC Shongwe experienced a pain in the hand and later visited Medi-Clinic for a check-up. He later left the clinic.”

Community safety, security and liaison MEC Pat Ngomane wished the injured a speedy recovery, added Mabuza. He said police would investigate a case of reckless and negligent driving.

Shongwe previously served as MEC for community safety, security and liaison. He was moved to his current position in August 2016 when provincial premier David Mabuza reshuffled his cabinet.
