JOHANNESBURG, January 12 – Two men were killed and four others injured on Friday morning after a head-on collision on the N1 highway, about 10 kilometres outside of Musina in Limpopo.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said when ER24 paramedics, along with other emergency services, arrived on the scene, they found a badly damaged SUV in the left-hand lane of the highway while a damaged taxi was found on the opposite side, located amongst some bushes.
“Paramedics discovered that the SUV had burst into flames. Fortunately, passing motorists had been able to extinguish the blaze, prior to the arrival of paramedics. The patients inside the SUV were assessed and found that two men had sustained numerous fatal injuries.
“Nothing could be done for them and they were later declared dead,” said Meiring.
Meiring said four other patients were found lying trapped inside the SUV. Assessments showed that all four patients were in a critical condition. Provincial Fire Services had to use specialised rescue equipment to free the trapped patients from the vehicle.
“Once freed, paramedics treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support interventions. Shortly after treatment, the patients were transported to Musina Provincial Hospital for further care.”
“The driver of the taxi was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries. He was treated and transported by another service to a nearby hospital,” said Meiring.
Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
