RUSTENBURG, December 13 – A North West highway patrol traffic officer arrested for allegedly soliciting bribes was granted R2,000 bail in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (better known as the Hawks) said.
Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said Zahid Bhayat, 40, was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigations unit for allegedly soliciting bribes from motorists on the N12 between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom.
He was arrested on Tuesday, at the Potchefstroom provincial office for corruption.
“Information was received alleging that the suspect would stop motorists driving luxurious vehicles claiming that they had exceeded the speed limit, threats of arresting the motorists would follow and subsequently he would demand a minimum payment of R2, 000 to allegedly cancel the speed reading.”
