JOHANNESBURG, December 7 – Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town end the midweek round of Absa Premiership fixtures in the relegation zone following a 0-0 draw at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
The defending champions remain at the foot of the table with the Urban Warriors falling to 15th spot, having like their counterparts, failed to win a league match in their last four outings.
The two teams were welcomed by pelting rain in the City of Gold with the weather making for challenging playing conditions.
This showed as both teams struggled for any sort of rhythm in the early exchanges, with the first attempt of any significance coming in the 21st minute of the clash.
Vincent Pule, the hero as the Clever Boys clinched Telkom Knockout glory over the past weekend, found space inside the area before going for goal, but Jody February was well positioned to gather the attacker’s rasping effort.
The Urban Warriors first shot in anger fell to Tashreeq Morris in the 34th minute as he tried his luck from range – hoping for some assistance from the surface – but Darren Keet was up to the task.
Neither side were able to conjure any further chances in the first half with the score deadlocked as the two teams headed for the tunnel at the break.
A similar tempo ensued following the interval with both teams found lacking in the final third of the pitch.
Chances, though, were to come as Mario Booysen guided his header attempt from a corner-kick straight down Keet’s throat in the 74th minute.
The Clever Boys squandered a golden chance to hit the front soon after as Amr Gamal failed to convert with the goal at his mercy. The forward guiding Reeve Frosler’s inch-perfect cross wide of goal at point-blank range.
Bidvest Wits pushed forward in search of the winner in the closing stages, but a goal wouldn’t come for either side as they shared the spoils to remain at the wrong end of the log standings.
