SA authorities seize crystal meth worth R4.5mln at OR Tambo airport

JOHANNESBURG, November 15 – A consignment of drugs worth R4.5 million has been seized at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the South African Revenue Services (Sars) said on Wednesday.

Sars spokesman Sandile Memela said a passenger from Lagos, Nigeria, carrying 15.1kg of crystal/ephedrine was intercepted by Sars Customs officials upon arriving from Ethiopia on Tuesday.

“The passenger was intercepted with two pieces of check-in luggage that were searched to reveal a whitish rough substance that was concealed at the bottom,” Memela said in a statement.

“A drug test for crystal/ephedrine meth was conducted which tested positive and the passenger was handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.”

Memela said the successful operation was a result of a joint collaboration involving Sars, SAPS and officials of the Airports Company of South Africa.
