JOHANNESBURG– A ward Councillor at Polokwane municipality has been arrested for allegedly soliciting cash from desperate job seekers, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.
“The [Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation better known as the] Hawks received a tip off about the suspect who was allegedly soliciting bribes from job seekers. A trap was set at the municipal offices and the suspect was arrested after she received a R2000 bribe from an undercover member,” said spokesman Captain Matimba Maluleke.
The 35-year-old councillor is expected to appear at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of corruption.
In another case, financial administrator Irene Pienaar, 55, was granted R2000 bail by the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
She faces 91 counts of fraud for allegedly stealing cash from her employer, Johan Steyn Attorneys. Maluleke said Pienaar allegedly stole money paid by her employer’s clients by directing the cash into her personal bank account.
“The company noticed irregularities on its finances after conducting a financial audit. The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Unit for investigation which led to the arrest of the suspect after it was established that she allegedly transferred client’s monies into her personal bank account. She will appear again at the same court on 7 December 2017,” said Maluleke.
