Police officer shot dead in Limpopo, state car stolen

JOHANNESBURG, October 9 – A South Africa Police Service (SAPS) colonel has been shot dead outside his home and the state-owned vehicle he was travelling in stolen in Thohoyandou, Limpopo.

”It is alleged that the Lieutenant Colonel arrived at his home from work on Sunday when he was shot and killed by two unknown suspects. The state vehicle which he was travelling in was stolen,” Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said on Monday.

Ngoepe said while police were searching for the alleged killers, they received information that two people had attacked security guards at Mpheni, Watervaal, Mbhokota, and Bungeni health centres. The attackers stole firearms from each of the four guards.

”This morning after midnight, the same suspects were spotted next to the University of Venda. They were immediately pursued by police.”

Ngoepe said a car chase ensued. During the pursuit, there was a shootout between police officers and the suspects. One constable was shot and seriously injured.

Last week, a traffic officer was hijacked after she arrived at her home in Lenyenye in a marked state vehicle. Police said she was blocked off by armed men who then took the VW Golf 6 and drove away. She was left unharmed.
