Classes set to resume at NMU

PORT ELIZABETH, October 5 – Operations at Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is set to resume on Thursday.
In a statement on Wednesday, NMU spokesperson, Zandile Mbabela, said an agreement had been reached between students and management on Wednesday afternoon.
This brings to an end two days of protest action following an horrific attack of two students on Monday night.
A 25-year-old student and her friend were violently attacked at the Second Avenue Campus in a computer lab. A man allegedly raped one of the students, stabbed the other with a scissors and robbed them of their cell phones and wallets.
NMU also welcomed the arrest of a suspect who was apprehended on Wednesday in connection with the rape and robbery at the Second Avenue Campus.
“The hope is that the suspect is brought to book and justice is served.”
“Nelson Mandela University also wishes to condemn an incident earlier this afternoon, during which shots were fired by occupants of a vehicle whose attempt to access South Campus was thwarted, amidst demonstrating students.”
Following the call for heightened security on campuses, NMU agreed to implement the following with immediate effect:
– Heightening security by increasing the number of staff to undertake visible patrolling across all campuses, including all teaching venues, from now until the end of exams.
– Expanding its partnership with SAPS and the Metro Police so as to attain extra support for our students in and around our campuses, particularly on Second Avenue and Missionvale.
– Improvement of the CCTV monitoring.
– Undertake control checks at entrances, taxi drop-off points and bus stops.
– Undertake an audit of all the external campus lighting.
– Extending its anti-crime initiatives, including those with the Summerstrand Community Crime Forum, especially towards the establishment of safe on- and off-campus “green routes” that will be monitored and patrolled.
