JOHANNESBURG, October 3 – Three men, accused of the murder of retired Durban principal Gona Pillay, are expected to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Cousins Basil, Braveman Underhill and Fredboy Msomi are expected to apply for bail.
On September 24, KwaZulu-Natal police said two men were arrested in connection with the murder of 63-year-old Pillay and the attempted murder of her 67-year-old husband.
On September 20, Gona Pillay and her husband were at their home in Silverglen, Chatsworth in Durban at around 7pm when they were approached by four people who pretended to have an interest in viewing their house which was on sale, Captain Nqobile Gwala said at the time.
“The suspects attacked the victims, fatally stabbing Gona Pillay while her husband was taken to hospital after he sustained serious injuries.”
Following an intensive investigation by Bayview detectives, two suspects, aged 26 and 30, were arrested. The first was arrested on September 21, and the second on September 23, also in the Umbumbulu area, Gwala said.
A Mercedes Benz E class belonging to the Pillays was recovered in the Umbumbulu area. A murder weapon allegedly used to commit the offence was also recovered.
