JOHANNESBURG, September 27 – Police in Limpopo are investigating three cases of arson after a group of villagers burnt down three houses near Giyani, accusing the home owners of being involved in the killing of a taxi driver.
”A three roomed house, another four roomed house and one roundavel house belonging to different families were burnt to ashes with everything inside in Blinkwater village this afternoon [on Tuesday]. There were no injuries or fatalities, the estimated damage caused is at more than R100,000,” said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.
The group was on the hunt for people they accused of killing 24-year-old Nyiko Nathiel Makhubele, a local taxi driver who was shot dead last week.
Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba condemned the incident. ‘
‘Members of the community must stop taking the law in their own hands. They are advised to call the police if they have information about any suspected person involved in a crime. They must inform the police rather than engage in these heinous acts.”
