London, September 22 – Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar were named Friday as the finalists for the FIFA best men’s player award for 2017.
Ronaldo helped Real Madrid successfully defend their Champions League title, while also claiming the Spanish domestic title.
Barcelona’s Messi was joined by former teammate Neymar, who joined French club Paris Saint-Germain this summer, in the top three for the award.
The award is decided through a combination of votes from national team coaches, captains, members of the media and fans, and will be presented at the Best FIFA Football Awards on October 23 in London.
Zinedine Zidane, the manager who orchestrated Real Madrid’s double-winning season, was joined as a finalist for the best men’s coach by Chelsea’s Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri of Juventus.
Finalists for the top goalkeeper award were Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus, Keylor Navas of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.
Leke Martens, who helped the Netherlands to victory at the Women’s Euro 2017, Carli Lloyd of the US and Deyne Castellanos of Venezuela are the finalists for the top women’s player.
Sarina Wiegman, who guided Holland to the Euro title, heads the list of finalists for women’s coach of the year, along with Nils Nielsen of the Danish national team and Gerard Pracheur of French side Lyon.
