JOHANNESBURG, September 12 – Police on Tuesday said they had recovered a pistol, bullets and had arrested four suspects – one of them at Glebelands Hostel – in connection with a recent murder and an armed business robbery.
More than 90 murders in KwaZulu-Natal province are thought to have been committed by hitmen living at the Glebelands Hostel. The notorious hostel is the subject of the ongoing Moerane Commission of Inquiry set up to look into political killings
Police said the arrests were a result of a multidisciplinary approach involving its members from Ethekwini Outer South Cluster and the National Intervention Unit that is focussed on Glebelands Hostel, Fakazi and Mashiwase areas.
“On Sunday night, operations were conducted which resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the confiscation of a pistol and an assortment of live rounds of ammunition,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.
“One of the suspects was arrested at Glebelands Hostel for murder and business robbery while the other three were found with a firearm and live rounds of ammunition.”
The suspects will appear before the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Zwane said further investigations will be conducted to ascertain if the suspects can be linked to other crimes. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic tests to ascertain if it was used in the commission of any other crimes at the hostel or eslewhere.
The KwaZulu-Natal acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa commended the police for the arrests and recovery of the illegal firearm.
“We continue to urge the community to report those possessing unlicensed firearms and not to protect those that commit crime,” said the major general.
