PHALABORWA– The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Hoedspruit near Phalaborwa are investigating a case of culpable homicide after five people died when a bakkie crashed and rolled on the R536 next to Zandspruit near the Hoedspruit CBD in the early hours of Saturday morning, Limpopo police said.
It was alleged that a Chevrolet bakkie was transporting 12 men, including the driver, from a local tavern at about 3.30am when the driver lost control of the bakkie, which then crashed into a tree and overturned, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe said.
Five men, including the driver, all aged between 26 and 53 died instantly in the crash. Five other men were seriously injured and taken to the Tintswalo Hospital in Accornhoek. Two others sustained minor injuries.
“The identities of all the deceased is still unknown at this stage. The cause of this accident is still unknown but the police investigations are still continuing,” Ngoepe said.
