Tip-off leads to R2,8mln abalone bust in Cape Town

CAPE TOWN, August 15  – Cape Town police arrested two suspects after a tip-off led them to recover dry abalone with an estimated value of R2,8 million.
In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesperson, Sinathi Joni, said K9 members in Philippi worked with community members who on Monday provided them with information about suspected criminal activity in the area.
“Upon following up on the information received, members arrested two suspects, aged 27 and 29 years, with dry abalone with an estimated value of R2.8 million sealed in boxes and a firearm that is not safeguarded inside the house.”
The men will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court later this week where they will face charges of abalone possession and failure to safeguard a firearm.
