St John’s College has dismissed the teacher found guilty of racism. This comes after Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi had met the with the school this morning and had given it a 1pm deadline to come to an acceptable conclusion.

St John’s, a private Anglican school for boys, had released a statement that a senior staff member had been found guilty of misconduct by an independent senior counsel in a hearing related to charges of racism. The school had said that it welcomed the ruling, and that the staff member, a senior teacher, had already resigned from senior positions and taken a salary cut and lost benefits. It said that the teacher had been issued with a final written warning.

However Lesufi was unhappy with this and demanded that the school retract the statement. In comments made in relation to the outcry, Lesufi said there was no space for racists under any circumstances.

At 1pm the MEC announced the teacher had left St John’s with immediate effect.

One tweet showed what appeared to be the school pupils conducting a protest in solidarity with the victims.

However, many were not happy with the outcome, with others using the controversy to air their views on education and racism in general. The school also enjoyed some support.
