One killed, another seriously injured in Upington bakkie crash

UPINGTON, July 2– A man was killed and another sustained serious injuries when their bakkie crashed into a tree along Borcherd Street in Upington in the Northern Cape late on Saturday night, paramedics said.

Shortly after 10pm, paramedics from ER24 and the local emergency medical services (EMS) arrived on the scene where they found the bakkie on the side of the road, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“Both men were still trapped in the vehicle. The local fire department had to use rescue tools to free them from the wreckage. One of them sustained fatal injuries. Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene. The second occupant sustained serious injuries. He was treated on the scene and rushed to Dr Harry Surtie government hospital for further care.”

The circumstances surrounding the accident were not yet known, Vermaak said.
