DA ward councillor gunned down in Cape Town

JOHANNESBURG, June 22 – The Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed its shock and sadness on Thursday after the fatal shooting of one of their councillors.

DA Western Cape Acting Leader Bonginkosi Madikizela said Xolile Gwanxu, a councillor in the greater Philippi area, was ambushed by unknown assailants on Wednesday night.

“Councillor Gwanxu, a long-standing DA member, was a well-known and respected leader in the area he served, and he did so with honourable commitment and determination.”

Gwangxu was allegedly shot dead after he facilitated a meeting which was held at his office in the local community hall.

“His killer or killers are alleged to have shot him as he was busy locking up the venue following the meeting.”

Madikizela said the DA welcomed the police’s investigation into the matter and hoped the perpetrator or perpetrators would soon be apprehended.

“Our thoughts are with his family during this sad time.”
