Alleged killers of actor and radio dj arrested

JOHANNESBURG, May 16 -Police on Tuesday said four men had been taken into custody for questioning in relation to the alleged murder case of former Generations actor and Jozi FM DJ, Mandla Hlatshwayo.

Hlatshwayo, 40, and his friend Oupa “Chom Chom” Duma were gunned down on Sunday evening when they tried to stop an armed robbery outside a Soweto pub in Pimville. Two women were robbed of their cellphones.

The robbers turned on them and shot both of them. Hlatshwayo and his friend were declared dead on the scene.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said four men had been placed in custody, but was coy to confirm if they were linked to the actor’s murder.

“I can confirm that police are questioning four people after they were arrested with firearms and drugs in Soweto last night,” Dlamini said.

“At this stage we cannot say whether they are linked to the murder or not. That is why we are questioning them. We have not charged them with murder yet.”

Hlatshwayo played the role of Siphiwe Khoza for seven years in the popular local television soapie, Generations. He was now a DJ at Jozi FM, which broadcasts to Soweto, Kagiso, Lenasia, Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Kempton Park, Germiston and Alberton.

The family has reportedly said it would announce details of his memorial service and funeral soon.

Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa and Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko on Monday passed their condolences to the Hlatshwayo family.
