Six dead in freak accident in Durban harbour

DURBAN – Six men have been killed and several others injured after a freak accident on Bayhead Road in Durban, emergency services ER24 reported on Friday.

Unconfirmed initial reports were that the incident took place at the South African Navy’s base in Durban harbour.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene and found rescue teams already in attendance, situated near a sewer pit.

“Rescue teams had already retrieved the bodies of six men from the sewer pit,” Meiring said. “Paramedics assessed all six men and found that they showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the men and they were declared dead on the scene.

“Several other patients were found on the scene with minor injuries.”

Meiring said the patients were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

The details surrounding this incident were not immediately known but local authorities are on the scene for further investigations.
