Murder trial of ‘hunter who mistook farm worker for a warthog’ postponed

JOHANNESBURG – The trial of a 39-year-old hunter, who shot dead a farm worker he “mistook for a warthog”, has been postponed in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court, Limpopo police said on Friday.

The murder accused was arrested last week. He was making his second appearance on Thursday when the matter was postponed.

The accused and a woman were hunting for warthogs [bosvarke] at the Meisiesvlei farm, Tuinplaas, last week at night. The accused said he heard sounds of movement.

“The man then fired shots in the direction [of the sound] and when they reached the spot they realised they had shot a human being. The police were then called … the firearm used was taken for ballistic testing,” said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

The deceased, 23-year-old Jan Railo, was employed at a neighbouring farm.

The murder accused’s lawyer failed to show up in court on Thursday and as a result the case was postponed to Monday.
