Ghana mourns passing of Sam Arday

ACCRA, Ghana, February 14 (ANA) – Ghana football was thrown into a state of mourning on Sunday following the death of one its iconic coaches, Sam Arday.

He passed on around midday at an Accra-based hospital after losing the battle to an undisclosed illness. He was 71.

Nicknamed “Multi-System Man”, he was the first coach to guide an Africa team to an Olympic medal in football, bronze with Ghana’s Under-23 team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.

The Ghana Olympic team also reached the quarterfinals of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA, under his watch.

One of the revered Ghanaian football brains, he also guided the Ghana Under-17 to win gold at the 1995 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Ecuador. The Black Starlets earlier won the continental championship in Mali.

He also had two stints at the helm of the Ghana national senior team, 1997 to 1997 and briefly in 2004 during the qualifying campaign for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

Arday also enjoyed memorable stints with top local sides including Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Ashantigold and Okwawu United.

Until his death, he was the Technical Director of West African Football Academy (formerly Fetteh Feyenoord Academy), which served a breeding grounds for national stars including Dominic Adiyiah, Harrison Afful, Jordan Opoku, Nana Akwasi Asare, Philemon McCarthy among others.

He becomes the latest high profile Ghanaian coach to have passed away in recent times after the likes of Cecil Jones Attuquayefio, Charles Kumi Gyamfi, Ben Kouffie, Fred Osam Doudu and Emmnauel Afranie. – African News Agency (ANA)
